This is probably the last one that is done with a photograph from my archive. I'm planning to go out soon and take a couple of new photographs which I can use for this project.

Capturing the Elite

I've been commissioned by Kupferblau Magazin to take a small series of photographs which should present sort of a critical comment on the University of Tübingen's struggle to become an 'elite university' by taking part in the government's Exzellenzinitiative program.
I decided for a concept in which a personification of the elite is being (mis-)placed into different everyday university contexts (in the canteen for instance). This contrast between the elite world and the everyday world should raise the question how the elite idea is going to fit into Tübingen and whether the university is qualified to become elite at all.
Among the pictures I took, the one above fits least into this concept. Yet it best represents the context of Tübingen becoming elite.
The whole series will soon be published in Kupferblau Magazin (and here as well).

And Now for Something Completely Different

Thought this might be interesting: three drafts for an idea I recently had about possible T-shirt prints. All these images were created from actual photographs I took. I chose a couple of pictures that I found suitable for experimenting with these effects. In case I'll start following this project again, I'll keep you informed about the results.
By the way: The last picture shows the legendary Dick 4 Dick, a sort of "elektro-trash-hard-rock-art-porno-band" (soundmag.de) from Poland. See the original photograph here.

Above is the first of my pictures being printed in a newspaper. It is a press picture of Elise Schmit, winner of Luxembourg's Concours littéraire National 2010, which was published in the weekly newspaper d'Lëtzebuerger Land.

The front page of the current issue features two of my pictures; one is for an article about burnt-out students, whereas the other one and the one inside were taken at the French Filmfestival in Tübingen.

I finally finished the pictures from the Stiftskirche, a late gothic church right in the center of Tübingen. I already shot them in July and it took me ridiculously long to edit them, mostly because my computer could not really cope with the amount of data. Each picture is a combination of several single shots (like in a panorama picture). The second one for instance, is a collage of 10 individual pictures, which makes it an 800MB photoshop file...

Last week I took a couple of pictures of Elise Schmit, who won this year's Luxembourgian National Literature Award with her novel Brachland. The goal was to take proper author portraits that would still come across very natural. With the novel's protagonist being a gardener, we thought it might be a good idea to have some cultural landscape as a setting. It was a lovely and pleasant shoot, which we really enjoyed. Rather minimalistic technical wise, using available light only.

The pictures are already being used as official press pictures, for instance by RTL Luxembourg and newspapers such as d'Letzebuerger Land.

As promised a while ago, here is a link to CampusTV's clip on my exhibition. It has already been broadcasted on the regional program and is available on CampusTV's website. I think they did an excellent job, hope you are all able to view it. For the future, I might prefer to stay behind the camera, though. It just feels a bit more comfortable ;)
The exhibition in Tübingen's Bierkeller is still going on until next March!

I would also like to draw your attention to the photography exhibition Photographica of Thomas Susanka and Lars Hilscher here in Tübingen. Both of them will present a variety of their great photgraphs, including landscape, concert, architecture, and street photographs. Some of Thomas' work can be viewed on his blog as well. The vernissage will be held on Friday the 29th of October, so if you are around: have a look!

Landmarks: Brandenburger Tor

Kupferblau Magazin

I'm quite happy that there's a short portrait of my friend Kilian and me in the current issue of Tübingen's University Magazine Kupferblau. The whole article ("Das Campus Who was Who") is about students and professors who got themselves talked about during the summer semester.

Students being portrayed are for instance Agnieszka Malczak, a Green Member of the German Parliament, Jonas Schaible, whose blog post is said to have led to the resignation of Germany's President Horst Köhler, and... well... me, having an exhibition at Tübingen's Bierkeller until March :)

Came across dozens of these as a slightly disturbing surprise on an urban exploration in Tübingen. Looks like the abandoned building, which was supposed to become a concert hall, is a popular place among Tübingen's drug addicts.

On 2nd of May I went to Salford's Sounds from the Other City Festival. A whole 12 hours of music, poetry, drinks and cupcakes (and yarn bombs)! More than 40 great bands, such as Egyptian Hip Hop, Dutch Uncles and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs in different venues mostly all along Chapel Street (inclunding St Phillips Church).
It was great fun and I had the chance to see MAY68 again, which I first saw at last year's Eurocultured Festival, and which became one of my favourite Manchester bands. Along with Egyptian Hip Hop, Dutch Uncles and Delphic, they are another band from Manchester, about to become big. A few months ago Arte, the French-German TV channel, did a show on the Manchester music scene, protraying MAY68 as well. I like the "intergalactic" promo video for their single My Ways, especially the close-ups in it. So I decided to take a couple of close-ups of their performance!
Last week, they played at Glastonbury. You can view the BBC's clips of their performance on their blog.

This week the American philosopher and law professor Martha C. Nussbaum, who is considered to be one of the most important intellectuals of the US, is visiting Tübingen.
In the course of the Unseld Lectures 2010, held by the university's Forum Scientiarum, she gave a lecture on "Liberty of Conscience". Nussbaum was mainly dealing with religious liberty and how European and American societies can provide a fair and equal treatment of their various religions.

Campus-TV was there and did a clip on the exhibition, as well as a little "behind the scenes". I will probably post it here, once they got it done.

It's been a while now since my last post, I will use university as an excuse. It's actually quite busy at the moment. Apart from that, I've spent a lot of time choosing, processing and revising pictures for an upcoming exhibition at Tübingen's Bierkeller!!

I'm very happy and grateful the guys from the pub are giving me the opportunity to display some of my pictures. I chose 12 pictures of which I will upload some within the next few days. The vernissage for the exhibition will be on June 4th, so if anyone of you will be around, you are invited to come as well!

Manchester Architecture and Design Festival

I'm quite happy that the Manchester Society of Architects featured one of my pictures on their website for this year's Manchester Architecture and Design Festival. It is a picture out of a whole series, which I took for two architecture students who were doing a street art project on Piccadilly Gardens last May. Some (revised) pictures of this series can be found here on my blog.

This year the festival will be held for the second time. It is thought to promote the city's design and architecture. There are numerous activities, events and exhibitions, which can all be found on the website. So if you are from Manchester: have a look.

Between Concrete Walls

These pictures were taken right underneath the Autobahn, the German motorway A7. I took them at the end of a bridge with the bridge's joint right above me. Being there makes you feel a bit like being in a bunker, with all these thick and rough concrete walls and the constant, loud banging of cars and trucks crossing the joint. Didn't prevent me from staying there and taking some shots.

Diese Woche durfte ich direkt das ehrenWort aussuchen. Nachdem ich mich für das Wort "Freiheit" entschieden hab ist mir klar geworden, dass ich zu dem Thema eigentlich kaum Bilder hab. Allerdings finde ich, dass das Bild von der Skulptur Flying vor dem blauen Himmel mit den hohen, vorbeiziehenden Wolken sehr gut passt. Das Bild entstand in Portishead, eine Stadt in der Nähe von Bristol in Südwestengland, wo auch die gleichnamige Band herkommt.

This week I had to choose a word for the ehrenWort project. After deciding for the word "Freedom", it occured to me that I don't have many pictures matching the topic. However I think this picture of the sculpture called Flying with the blue sky and the high clouds in the background is a good choice. I took the picture in Portishead, a city close to Bristol in the Southwest, also home of the band of the same name.

Auf ehrenwort-blog.blogspot.com wird wöchentlich ein neues Wort veröffentlicht, zu welchem jeder Beiträge in Form von Bildern einschicken kann. Ich finds ein sehr cooles, und kreatives Projekt, weswegen ich mich dazu entschlossen hab mitzumachen!
Diese Woche ehrenWort: "Fundstücke". Da muss ich nicht lange überlegen: Der weggeworfene/vergessene/fortgewehte Schirm mit dem LOVE-Aufdruck, auf den ich bei nem Spaziergang durch den englischen Herbst gestoßen bin, ist definitiv mein (fotografisches) Lieblingsfundstück!

These are my first indoor portraits, which I took after buying an external flash last year. Although I didn't have much experience with lighting and the shooting was more like an improvised test run for the new equipment, the pictures turned out to look quite nice - mainly thanks to the model, my photogenic and patient friend Helen.
